Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

4 days / 3 nights

The Classic Inca Trail is one of the most famous trekking routes in the world and a must-do experience for those looking to combine history, culture and adventure. For four days, you will walk along the same trails that the ancient Incas used to reach their sacred citadel, Machu Picchu. This approximately 42-kilometer trek offers spectacular landscapes, from towering mountains and cloud forests to impressive archaeological ruins on each stretch of the path.

Each day is unique: it begins with a rural Andean atmosphere, where you will visit small towns and sites such as Llactapata. Then you will face challenges such as the climb to the Abra de Warmiwañusca, the highest point of the route, before entering mystical forests full of history and nature. As you progress, you will feel the connection with the rich Inca heritage as you explore ruins such as Runkurakay, Sayacmarca and Wiñay Wayna.

The highlight of the trip comes on the fourth day, at dawn, when you pass through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and catch your first glimpse of the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu. It is a moment that rewards your efforts with an indescribable sense of accomplishment and wonder.

This experience is not just a trek; it is a journey into the heart of one of the most fascinating civilizations in history, accompanied by natural landscapes that will leave you speechless. If you are looking for an adventure that combines physical effort, spiritual connection and cultural wonders, the Classic Inca Trail is the ideal destination.

4-Day Classic Inca Trail Itinerary

The Classic Inca Trail is a journey through breathtaking landscapes, ancient history, and spiritual connection. This 4-day trek offers a unique blend of adventure and culture, culminating in the awe-inspiring arrival at Machu Picchu. Here's what each day entails:

Day 1: Cusco - Km 82 - Wayllabamba (12 km / 7.5 miles, 5-6 hours)

  • Morning: Begin the day with an early morning drive from Cusco to Km 82, the starting point of the Inca Trail. After clearing the checkpoint, the trek begins with a gentle walk through scenic landscapes of the Sacred Valley, including views of the snow-capped Veronica Mountain. Along the way, visit the archaeological site of Llactapata, an impressive Inca ruin surrounded by terraces.
  • Afternoon: Continue trekking through picturesque valleys and forests until reaching Wayllabamba (3,000 m / 9,842 ft), the first campsite.
  • Evening: Enjoy a freshly prepared meal by the trekking team and rest in your tent under a blanket of Andean stars.

Day 2: Wayllabamba - Warmiwañusca Pass - Pacaymayo (16 km / 10 miles, 8-10 hours)

  • Morning: Fuel up with an early breakfast before tackling the most challenging section of the trail. Climb steadily through high-altitude forests and grasslands to the Dead Woman's Pass (Warmiwañusca), the highest point of the trail at 4,200 m (13,779 ft). The breathtaking views from the top make the effort worthwhile.
  • Afternoon: Descend to Pacaymayo (3,600 m / 11,811 ft), where you'll set up camp for the night. The downhill trek offers a chance to recover and enjoy the surrounding mountains.
  • Evening: Share stories with your group over dinner and rest after a physically demanding day.

Day 3: Pacaymayo - Runkurakay - Wiñay Wayna (16 km / 10 miles, 8-9 hours)

  • Morning: The third day is the longest but arguably the most rewarding. Begin with a climb to Runkurakay, an Inca lookout point, and continue to the ruins of Sayacmarca, a fortress with stunning views of the surrounding valleys. The trail then winds through lush cloud forests, rich with flora and fauna.
  • Afternoon: After passing through Phuyupatamarca, or "The City Above the Clouds," descend to the campsite at Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft), an impressive Inca site with terraces and ceremonial areas.
  • Evening: Celebrate the final night on the trail with a special dinner, reflecting on the journey so far and preparing for the highlight: Machu Picchu.

Day 4: Wiñay Wayna - Machu Picchu - Cusco (5 km / 3.1 miles, 2 hours)

  • Early Morning: Start before dawn to reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) in time to witness the first light over Machu Picchu. The sight of the ancient citadel bathed in morning sunlight is unforgettable.
  • Morning: Descend to Machu Picchu and enjoy a guided tour exploring the main landmarks, including the Temple of the Sun, Intihuatana, and the agricultural terraces. You'll also have free time to explore on your own or hike additional routes, like Huayna Picchu (optional, pre-booking required).
  • Afternoon: Take the bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch and board the train back to Cusco, marking the end of an incredible adventure.
